What part of trail running do you appreciate the most?
I know that for many of us, once we start running on trails, it's hard to ever go back to the road.
Let us know what it is about trail running that has you hooked. Don't be shy, leave a comment and let's talk trail.

Wow, first comment, lots of pressure...
I'd say the reason I am hooked on trail running is the same reason I love backpacking and hiking. The trail!
Why choose to run on roads among the cars and smog when you can choose to run on a trail, with nobody around, in the clean fresh air. A no brainer for me here in North Carolina
I run both on road and on trails. The thing I like best about trail running is that it forces me to be more involved in my run; namely, thinking about where my next step will be, whether or not there'll be any branches to snag my arms & legs, what critters are nearby, etc. - mentally invigorating. I don't get that as much with road running, with the exception of whether or not the oncoming cars will see me.
FRIENDS! One of those pair of Montrails is mine and the Montrail hat belongs to me too. The hat was given to me by Annette and she is also the picture taker. A small group (Annette, Beth, Jim, JJ, Tammy and myself) met this past Sunday for a rainy romp through the woods. Our love for the trail and being one with nature bring us together. The trail allows us to meet new and fascinating people, whom we later call friends. Trail running for me has created a vast extended family and for this I thank all of my trail running friends. Rick
I love the trails because it allows me to shut out everything else. No street noise, no cars, no city noise, no stop lights, nothing. Just me, the outdoors and running.
I like to run on any sort of surface my body will allow me to...
...yet the trails are the only place I feel like I can fly! When I run trails the freedom I feel is like what a soaring bird must experience as it looks over this planet. Trail running always makes me appreciate my life more.
I agree with what so many people above have said too-especially with Rick. Trail companions very quickly become kindred spirits and friends!
Here is a toast (raise hand held water bottle or glass of beverage) to running in the mountains on trails on the 1st day of Spring!

Let's hear it for North Carolina trail running!
I started running trails after many years of hiking and long thru-hikes. I decided that trail running is basically just a faster form of hiking.
Mainly though, I stick to the trails b/c of the incredible places they take you.
I also find that it's easier for me to keep going on the trails, even when I'm tired. On the road, it's easier to get bored and quit.
Here's to running trails! (especially in VA!)

I run in the mountains to meet women.
It has not been working out very well so far.
